Lizard King

Lizard King 17 signed croppedSearch for Jim Morrison paintings and mostly you will find crap. I felt it was time to share this with a larger visual audience. This one took many hours with multiple revisions. Tonight I have been listening to the remastered Doors CD ‘Strange Days’ through my Rotel amp and Mordaunt-Short speaker towers. Sounds Magnificent!

A recent visit to The Doors FB page shows over 15,000,000 ‘likes’. Amazing !

Jim Morrison was a very complex man: poet, singer, rock star, avatar of the revolution, drunk, lizard king, tortured, insightful, ecstatic, visionary, victim, god, hypnotic, human, sexual, violent, peaceful, humble, egotistical and many other things.

He was a chameleon, a living mirror of the times and after all these years we still project on him. What do you see?

Let the Carnival Begin

Let the Carnival Begin

After a long haitus I am returning to the circular art form. This one was created with three different programs. The pattern was created with CAD design, then the lines were transformed into raster objects with CorelDraw,, then the colours were selected and dropped in with Corel Painter. It was a pleasure to create this one, even though simpler in execution than some of my previous Geometric Mandalas. As always limited edition prints are available and can be shipped anywhere in the world. Thank you for visiting myartistego.

Red Moon Six

Red Moon Six

Full Moon in Leo, sign of creativity, coming up in a few days.

‘Red Moon Six’ is a Spiritual Surrealist work that not only symbolizes the creative process, but is itself an ongoing process. The red lizard represents transformation, born from the moon goddess’s mind. Born in 2005, the painting continued to evolve with elements added and deleted over the ensuing years.

The beauty of working digital media is that one can save different versions of the same work, or completely change any or all elements at any time.

Forms created today may find infinite life on the Web. Art has truly slipped the bonds of time.

Red Magus

Red Magus

Another Spiritual Surrealist painting from The Saga of the Journeyer, who is creating swirls and spheres and circles of pure energy, while joy, wisdom, love, and peace arise from absolute no-thingness.

Twin Dragons

Twin Dragons

Twin Dragons Dancing with the Pearl of Truth. This started out as a coloured pencil drawing 10 years ago and I scanned it to work on colours and shapes with Corel Painter.

This is a metaphor for two enlightened beings playing with the ultimate truth. What is the truth? Look, look, it is that which is reading these words and seeing this picture. One thought of right or wrong, this or that, beautiful or ugly, and the pearl is gone.

Mt Kulshan (aka Mt Baker)

Mt Kulshan (aka Mt Baker)

Hike up trough thin air and open your singular eye to the vision of the Sacred Mountain Kulshan.
Pure Earth energy is clearing the mind and the body.

Energy or Zenergy is everywhere, but it is more powerfully felt near the great volcanic peaks of the west coast.

This is a Corel Painter altered photo, the result of a recent hike in the Mt Baker area 2 hours Southeast of Vancouver, BC.

These peaks were mostly renamed by European sailors and explorers but their Native names seem more appropriate:

Mt Shasta in Northern California….Shasta
Mt Hood in Oregon….Wy’East
Mt Rainier in Washington……Ti Swaq (new proposed Native name)
Mt. Adams = Pah Do
Mt. Baker = Kulshan
Mt. St. Helens = Suek

A Zen koan (Chinese Kung’an) to illustrate this painting:

A monk asked Shao Shan: “Is there any phrase which is neither right or wrong?” Shao Shan answered, “A piecs of white cloud does not show any ugliness.”

Spiritual Surrealism

Crystalline Shore 1

This spiritual surrealist painting symbolizes another step in the Journeyer’s quest for Ultimate Enlightenment. He is gazing at crystalline circular forms, based on sacred geometry, which are symbolic of the One which is All. This is the Utopian vision, our soul’s true Home. The light body of the Journeyer represents both the evanescence of the human body and at the same time, the light of pure Awareness. Jesus said: “when your eye becomes single, your whole body will be filled with light.”

The Journeyer can be seen in another work, “Atomic Threshold” on my website in the New Works Gallery. Both of these works are available as signed limited edition prints on archival paper or canvas.

Spiritual surrealism is a loose term which includes a wide range of styles of art. An image search online will yield everything from New Age paintings to obvious imitations of the original surrealist masters. Yet there is little actual spiritual reference, aside from the occasional third eye, or beams of light, etc. How can this sub genre be clearly defined or quantified when, by its very nature and subject matter, it is mysterious and limitless? Is it possible in our time, when art can literally be anything, to define an emerging Spiritual Surrealist movement? Who are the true pioneers out there expanding the boundaries of this important field? Who will create the new definition of a genre that may defy description?

Much of my work could be termed “spiritual,” for instance the Mandalas, my Zen and Buddhist art, perhaps some of the mythological paintings, but are they surrealistic? I think not. To my mind, surrealism plays with space and time, relating disparate elements, and morphing forms into one another. It is surprising, perhaps shocking, out of the ordinary, a fantastic scene or something which stretches the mind beyond its normal boundaries.

I highly recommend the movie “Arena,” a documentary on YouTube in seven parts about Salvador Dali. At one phase of his life he began to paint more mystical images, rich with Christian symbology. Yet when he is asked about his faith he says that he still has doubts about the existence of God. Dali cultivated his own mythology and created a surrealistic persona. However his genius was making real the symbolism of the unconscious mind. He was not a sojourner of the  soul realm.

A question for all you artists out there…..when creating a new piece is it possible to transcend artist’s ego, to let it go? Can one become pure creativity? Could the spiritual surrealist soul create itself?

More thoughts to follow. Stay tuned.

Cleopatra

Here is the queen of Egypt in all her glowing beauty, based on a photo from the film Ceasar and Cleopatra starring Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains. In the movie Cleopatra was reduced to a pawn in Caesar’s game but historians now know that she was strong and intelligent, descended from the Ptolemaic Dynasty. Wikipedia has a fairly complete entry on this female pharaoh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleopatra An earlier version of this painting was featured on this blog two years ago but I wanted to give it more contrast and created the black background. More detail was added to the headdress and some final touches were made to the skin and eyes. As I have done with other portraits, I wanted to depict the innate nobility, beauty and strength of the human soul. This is also a celebration of my recent sale of several other limited edition prints. A signed, limited edition of this print (25 only…14″ x 24″ approx) is available for $200 and can be shipped to anywhere in North America for an additional $30 Cdn.
